The Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest is a non-profit, community oriented,
youth organization. The Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest was established to
help young people prepare to face today's challenges, and promote
Scottish-American culture, traditions, and values. Tradition defines the scope
of our mission as the transmissions of values, customs, and beliefs, from one
generation to the next. This tradition encompasses the past, present, and
future, and is central to the Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest.
Past: The Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest maintain two Living History branches that participate in American Civil War reenacting. These branches are the primary vehicle for working with young people. We create Living History Camps for local schools to help educate students about the Civil War, and what it was really like for those that lived during that critical event. We also participate in historical preservation projects.
Present: We sponsor several social events throughout the year, and help to create opportunities for our members to learn Scottish and American History, and Scottish language, sports, music, and culture. We also participate in community service projects to help the larger community around us as we help ourselves.
Future: This is the most important of the three traditions. Children are the future and without them all of our values and traditions will disappear and be forgotten. We sponsor our youth branches with the intention of developing the character of our younger members by teaching and demonstrating traditional Scottish-American values which include but are not limited to: strong work ethics; education; responsibility; accountability; integrity; loyalty; and self discipline. Our success will be measured by our young members ability to succeed in the modern world, and their desire to give back to their communities once they have. Heritage was once described as inheritable property. It has now come to mean inherited culture. If we do not teach these values and traditions to our children, they will be lost forever.
